On the road leading to Elafonissi, you will find the Topolia tunnel above the wild gorge of the Τopolia (Topoliano gorge for the locals).
Is a single-lane unlit tunnel, 110m long and 4m wide, built-in 1920 by Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos.
The car flow is regulated by traffic lights on both ends of the tunnel.
During the summertime, this section can get quite busy due to its narrowness.
It’s said to be the only tunnel on the island of Crete that was dug by hand.
