The Etz Hayyim synagogue which means in Hebrew: Tree of Life is located in the old town of Chania and is the only surviving one in Crete.
It is located in the Jewish neighborhood, on Kondylaki Street.
It was built in the 17th century, was severely damaged during World War II, and was restored in 1997-1999.
Since its restoration, it has served as a place of Prayer, Study, Recollection and Reconciliation.
The synagogue welcomes Jews of all different backgrounds, along with non-Jewish visitors who can take a guided tour of the synagogue and learn all about Cretan Jewish history and traditions from one of our staff members or attend our regular Kabbalat Shabbat and high holiday services
