The Maritime Museum of Crete is located at the entrance of the Venetian fortress of Firka, on Kountouriotis Beach, in the old port of Chania, Crete.
The Maritime Museum of Crete was established in 1973 to preserve and portray Greek maritime traditions, particularly those of Crete, which are an important component of the country’s heritage. After the Marine Museum of Greece at Piraeus, this is Greece’s second antiquity maritime museum.
The show spans two floors and is organized into 13 sections. The Union of Crete with Greece in 1913 is documented on the ground floor, while the first floor is dedicated to the Second World War and the Battle of Crete. There are 2,500 items in the permanent exhibition, including antiquities, sea objects, paintings, maps, pictures, ship models, and numerous nautical instruments, among others.
