The Archaeological Museum of Chania, which is administratively under the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania, is located on Skra Street, in the historic district of Chalepa.
It was built on a plot of 11,526 m2, with a total useful area of about 6,000 m2. The exhibition includes more than 3,500 ancient objects, of which about 1,000 are exhibited for the first time. Its location offers a panoramic view of much of the city, especially its coastal front.
The new Archaeological Museum of Chania, in addition to the exhibition spaces and spaces for the conservation and storage of finds, includes spaces for the organization of temporary exhibitions, educational programs, and events, making it a place of culture, education, and entertainment. Also on the ground floor, there is a shop of the ODAP, while for the visually impaired, two tables with tactile exhibits have been set up, one in the prehistoric collection and one in historical times, where visitors can not only get information from the inscriptions written in Braille but also palpate the objects themselves.
